Traveling Wilburys (2 CD / 1 DVD) $16.24 The Traveling Wilburys were one of the few supergroups that lived up to their promise, because they didn’t try to. Things started inauspiciously when George Harrison, needing a B-side for a 1988 single, called in friends Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Roy Orbison for assistance. Two albums later–the second without Orbison, who had passed away shortly after the first was released–the loose… |

1001 Escapes to Experience Before You Die $3.54 Vacation travelers seeking truly unusual destinations and unforgettable experiences will find a wealth of ideas in this beautifully illustrated volume. Every experience described represents a genuine escape from the merely ordinary, whether it’s contemplating a sunset from a minimalist mountain retreat, traveling on the Nile aboard a nineteenth-century cabin cruiser, enjoying a stay in a Newfoundland lighthouse, or taking that most classic of train journeys on the Trans-Siberian railway. Some of these intensely atmospheric locations are reasonably easy to reach—for instance, the colorful Saugerties Lighthouse on the shore of New York’s Hudson River. Others, like the Hiram Bingham train, which goes to the lost Incan city of Machu Picchu, Peru, literally convey travelers to far corners of the earth. Just a few more of these many exotic travel experiences include—• The U.K.: Comb Thatch Cottage, Devon—a romantic hideaway in the woods of a country estate . . . or Belle Isle Castle in Northern Ireland—a 470 acre estate comprising eight islands on the north end of Upper Lough Erne • Finland: Kakslauttanen Hotel and Igloo Village • Turkey: House of Wishes, Urgup—cave rooms carved out of the rocks of Cappadocia • The Caribbean: Kamalane Cay, Bahamas—a heavenly beach resort renowned for its diving and fishing • Bhutan: Uma Paro—a five-star hotel located amid the wild beauty of the Himalaya Mountains • Seychelles: Cousine Island—a private island dedicated to nature conservation . . . and many, many moreWritten by aninternational team of travel writers, critics, and globetrotters, and illustrated with more than 800 magnificent color photos, 1001 Escapes to Experience Before You Die offers inspiration for adventurous travelers and glorious dreams for all others who pick the book up for simple |

8:55 to Baghdad $4.39 An absorbing contemporary journey which reveals the secret life of the world’s most widely read author. Andrew Eames, an adventurous, insightful and sympathetic observer, sets out to travel from London to Baghdad by train, following the route of the old Orient Express and an identical journey made by Agatha Christie in 1928. Agatha’s journey was to change her life completely, and led to her spending thirty seasons on archaeological digs in the deserts of Syria and Iraq. Eames’s own journey reveals fascinating details of this little known but exotic chapter in the life of the world’s most widely read author. The journey from London to Baghdad by train today is actually far harder than it was in Agatha’s day. Many of the countries Eames passes through, from the Balkans to the Middle East, have been deeply troubled in recent years. Eventually he arrives at the Iraqi border at the same time as the UN weapons inspectors. As the book approaches its final destination the shadow of war looms increasingly large. A compelling read, merging literary biography with travel adventure, The 8:55 to Baghdad is the journey of a lifetime. |

A Chariote of Fire $2.95 Here is an excerpt from the begining of the book:When the White Mountain express to Boston stopped at Beverly, it slowed op reluctantly, crashed off the baggage, and dashed on with the nervousness of a train that is unmercifully and unpardonably late. It was a September night, and the channel of home-bound summer travel was clogged and heaving. A middle-aged man—a plain fellow, who was one of the Beverly passengers—stood for a moment staring at the tracks. The danger-light from the rear of the onrushing train wavered before his eyes, and looked like a splash of blood that was slowly wiped out by the night. It was foggy, and the atmosphere clung like a sponge. “No,” he muttered, “it’s the other way. Batty’s the other way.” He turned, facing towards the branch road which carries the great current of North Shore life. “How soon can I get to Gloucester?” he demanded of one who brushed against him heavily. He who answered proved to be of the baggage staff, and was at that moment skilfully combining a frown and a whistle behind a towering truck; from this two trunks and a dress-suit case threatened to tumble on a bull-terrier leashed to something invisible, and yelping in the darkness behind. “Lord! This makes ‘leven dogs, cats to burn, twenty-one baby-carriages, and a guinea-pig travellin’ over this blamed road since yesterday—What’s that? Gloucester?—6.45 to-morrow morning.” “Oh, but look here!” cried the plain passenger, “that won’t do. I have got to get to Gloucester to-night.” “So’s this bull-terrier,” groaned the baggage-handler. “He got switched off without his folks—and I’ve got a pet lamb in the baggage-room bleatin’ at the corporation since dinner-time. Some galoot forgot the crittur. There’s a lost parrot settin’ alongside that swears in several foreign languages. I wish to Moses I could!” The passenger experienced the dull |

A Corkscrew is Most Useful: The Travellers of Empire $11.27 New – In the early 19th century there was a huge surge forward in travel of all kinds. Queen Victoria’s accession in 1837 came barely a year after John Murray’s first guidebook was published. Then in 1838 Bradshaw’s famous portable railway timetable appeared. In 1841 Thomas Cook, the world’s first travel agent, organised its first tour (from London to Leicester and back by train). The age of mass tourism had arrived. Side by side with it another phenomenom began to develop: exploration to wilder |

A Fantasy Of Mediterranean Travel $14.3 Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free.Excerpt from book:Section 3textit{y green umbrella as a baton shouted back his orders, and they were obeyed with such telling effect that in a short time the procession moved like a well oiled machine and we had no further trouble. By most of the pilgrims it was considered that this was hardly a fitting or dignified entrance into one of the noblest ruins of any time or country; but this is a practical age, and we got right down to the business of inspecting what is left of the Alhambra. When such a man as Washington Irving was so inspired by the marvelous beauty of this place and lived ninety days in one of these buildings (which was pointed out to us by Billfinger), in order to get the spirit of the times and place in which these halls were erected and peopled, and there wrote his celebrated historical and romantic book, textit{Tales of the Alhambra, published in 1829 (obtainable in any library), it would seem best that I leave the reader to peruse that famous work for ideas and details which, should they be supplied by the ordinary scribbler, could but belittle such a noble subject. I therefore suggest that those interested procure that book and read it for themselves. We went to bed early, for we had to rise long before daylight and take the train for Gibraltar, where the textit{King of Cork lay waiting for us, for she had steamed from Cadiz to “The Rock” after we left her; and although we had enjoyed every minute of the trip, we were glad to get back to the only home we had, on the water. We had made quite a circuit through Spain, and it had been a most interesting journey. We had thought of Spain as a land of dust, sand and rocky mountains, but instead of that we found broad, fertile plains, well cultivated and with every sign of prosperity. Above all other things the feature of the country is the thousands of well |

A Knight Of The Cumberland $6.54 The writing of John Fox, Jr. has had profound significance in the way America studies turn-of-the-century Appalachian mountain life, lending fondness for its customs, respect for its survival, and deep regard for its environmental and psychological altercations. “Knight of the Cumberland” gives a narrative and a vivid setting for these sentiments. The story is told by a writer who is the son of a moonshiner. He has moved to the city to contend with a more civilized existence, but he comes back to The Gap (Big Stone Gap, VA) every summer. This summer he brings along his little sister and a womanish, black-haired, black-eyed beauty that townspeople and mountainfolk perversely call “The Blight.” And yet no man nor woman nor stubborn mule could withstand her undefinable appeal. The boy and two girls travel from the north by train and arrive in town where they meet the Hon. Samuel Budd who is involved with the budding politics of this new district, Marston who engineered the train, and a drunken young tough who tries to attack Marston for a timeless injustice. There is an immediate trial where the young man is fined and told to leave town. He does, but his vision of The Blight wins his attention. The three travelers continue on their way up the mountain (silently protected by The Knight) because the boy had promised to show The Blight the blossoming, fragrant, Applachian summer. Before winter hits, the girls are sent back up north, but they revisit the next summer where there is an uncommon incorporation of tournament, duel, and stump-speaking. A Knight of the Cumberland $2.99 The writing of John Fox, Jr. has had profound significance in the way America studies turn-of-the-century Appalachian mountain life, lending fondness for its customs, respect for its survival, and deep regard for its environmental and psychological altercations. Fox attempts to illustrate the ways people of the wilderness struggled–sometimes unsuccessfully–with the patronizing socialites. Thecharacter of Marston the engineer and The Wild Dog, who is also The Knight, blends the civilizing effects of steady work and the emotional attraction of magnificence, whether by scenic beauty or human elegance. |

A Slow Train to Arcturus $24 The planet Miran had sent a spaceship to rendezvous with the enormous vessel that was approaching their star system. The vessel’s design was odd—a multitude of separate globular habitats in a framework—and most of the alien team that entered one of the habitats were slaughtered by savage creatures called “humans.” One alien had barely managed to escape to another habitat where the humans were more friendly, if rather technologically backward. But he needed to get back to his spaceship, and he would need one human’s help to do that. They would have to travel through several more habitats, each one isolated from the other, each with its own bizarre dangers and customs. And friendliness toward strangers was not one of those customs. . . |

LEAVING CALCUTTA — DIFFERENT ROUTES — GOALUNDO — FIRST IMPRESSIONS ON SEEING A RIVER STEAMER—JUTE SCENERY ON THE WAY—SAND-STORMS—DANGERS OF NAVIGATION—PILOTS— THE RAINS AND THE COLD WEATHER—SIGHTS—THE RIVER AS A HEALTH RESORT— GOALPARA AND GOWHATTY—BAZAARS—CHANGE OF MOSQUITOES—FISHERMEN—THE JUNGLE. LEAVING Calcutta from the Sealdah Station, and travelling by the Eastern Bengal Railway, the distance to Goalundo is easily accomplished in eight or nine hours ; but the line is so badly laid, the rattle caused by the train passing over the shaky wooden bridges so terrible, and the cars so stuffy, that journeying by this line is an adventure not to be too lightly undertaken. It is, however, the best and ordinarily adopted route, though there is an alternative selection of two other ways : either to embark on board the steamer at Calcutta, and go down the Hoogly, round through the Sunderbunds, so into the river Brahmapootra; or to travel by train right through to Dhubri, a long dusty journey, lasting forty hours, broken by many changes, with only the hazardous chance of, if lucky enough, just catching the steamer when arrived there. The route viaGoalundo saves about a week on board; the Dhubri route, ten or eleven days.’ But taking into consideration the trials and vexations of the long railway journey, the Goalundo route is by far the pleasanter and cheaper. If the intending visitor should happen to be in no hurry, the longer route from Calcutta by river would be most enjoyable; for though the scenery of the Sunderbunds has not a single interesting feature to recommend it—the whole district is as flat, sandy, jungly, inhospitable a spot as could well be imagined—yet there is a |

Accidental Human Deaths in the Australian Capital Territory: Canberra Air Disaster, 1940 $9.43 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The Canberra air disaster of 1940 was a plane crash that occurred near Canberra, the capital of Australia, on 13 August 1940, during World War II. The six passengers, including three members of the Australian Cabinet and the Chief of the General Staff, and the four crew were all killed. The deaths of the three cabinet ministers severely weakened the United Australia Party government of Robert Menzies and contributed to its fall in 1941. The Ministers, General White and their staff were being flown from Melbourne to Canberra for a Cabinet meeting on an RAAF Lockheed Hudson bomber flown by an experienced RAAF officer, Flight Lieutenant Robert Hitchcock. The Melbourne Herald reported: “The plane was seen by watchers at the Canberra Aerodrome and the Air Force station to circle the drome, and then rise and head south. It disappeared behind a low tree-dotted hill. There was an explosion and a sheet of flame, followed by a dense cloud of smoke… The Canberra Fire Brigade and ambulances from Queanbeyan and Canberra, as well as several Air Force tenders, arrived soon afterwards and fire extinguishers were played on the blazing wreckage. After about half-an-hour, when the blaze had died down, it was seen that the entire undercarriage, wings and structural supports of the plane had been torn away and were a smouldering mass in which were the charred bodies of those on board.” Two other Cabinet ministers, Senator George McLeay and Arthur Fadden, leader of the Country Party, had intended to fly to Canberra on the same flight, but for personal reasons decided to travel by train instead. Visit us online at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG – - MONDAY. – It was, if I remember rightly, five o’clock when we were all signalled to be present at the Ferry Depot of the railroad. An emigrant ship had arrived at New York on the Saturday night, another on the Sunday morning, our own on Sunday afternoon, a fourth early on Monday; and as there is no emigrant train on Sunday a great part of the passengers from these four ships was concentrated on the train by which I was to travel. There was a babel of bewildered men, women, and children. The wretched little booking-office, and the baggage-room, which was not much larger, were crowded thick with emigrants, and were heavy and rank with the atmosphere of dripping clothes. Open carts full of bedding stood by the half-hour in the rain. The officials loaded each other with recriminations. A bearded, mildewed little man, whom I take to have been an emigrant agent, was all over the place, his mouth full of brimstone, blustering and interfering. It was plain that the whole system, if system there was, had utterly broken down under the strain of so many passengers. |

After Redemption: Jim Crow and the Transformation of African American Religion in the Delta, 1875-1915 $21.95 After Redemption fills in a missing chapter in the history of African American life after freedom. It takes on the widely overlooked period between the end of Reconstruction and World War I to examine the sacred world of ex-slaves and their descendants living in the region more densely settled than any other by blacks living in this era, the Mississippi and Arkansas Delta. Drawing on a rich range of local memoirs, newspaper accounts, photographs, early blues music, and recently unearthed Works Project Administration records, John Giggie challenges the conventional view that this era marked the low point in the modern evolution of African-American religion and culture. Set against a backdrop of escalating racial violence in a region more densely populated by African Americans than any other at the time, he illuminates how blacks adapted to the defining features of the post-Reconstruction South— including the growth of segregation, train travel, consumer capitalism, and fraternal orders—and in the process dramatically altered their spiritual ideas and institutions. Masterfully analyzing these disparate elements, Giggie’s study situates the African-American experience in the broadest context of southern, religious, and American history and sheds new light on the complexity of black religion and its role in confronting Jim Crow. |

Altamont Commuter Express $54 The Altamont Commuter Express (also known as ACE, pronounced “ace”) is a regional rail service in California connecting Stockton with San Jose. It is named for the Altamont Pass, through which it travels. The service was started on October 19, 1998 with two trains daily in each direction (weekdays only), later increased to three trains in each direction, and as of August 2006 runs four trains daily in each direction, including a “midday” train each direction (until November 2, 2009, when this fourth train will cease operation due to low ridership and poor economic conditions). There are ten stops along its 86 mile (138 km) route, resulting in a total travel time of approximately 2 hours and 10 minutes end-to-end. Despite the fact that the tracks ACE runs on are owned by Union Pacific, ACE rarely experiences long delays as a result. ACE utilizes Bombardier BiLevel Coaches and MPI F40PH-3C locomotives, and is managed by the San Joaquin Regional Rail Commission, with operations contracted to Herzog Transit Services. Average weekday ridership is currently 3,700. ACE has explored the possibility of expanding on two lines – a Modesto-Sacramento line, and a Stockton-Pittsburg line. |

Amtrak Stations In New Jersey $8.96 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Pennsylvania Station, Metropark, Trenton Transit Center, Princeton Junction, Newark Liberty International Airport, New Brunswick. Excerpt: Pennsylvania Station (Newark) – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Designed by the renowned architectural firm McKim, Mead and White, the station is a mixture of Art Deco and Neo-Classical. The interior of the main waiting room has medallions illustrating the history of transportation, from wagons to steamships to cars and airplanes, the eventual doom of the railroad age. The current building was dedicated on March 23, 1935, and replaced a smaller structure; the first regular train to use it was a New York-Philadelphia express at 10:17 on March 24. Except for the separate, underground Newark Light Rail station, tracks are located above the ground. It was built to be one of the centerpieces of the former Pennsylvania Railroad’s (PRR’s) train network, and was the western hub of its Newark-New York City train service to Penn Station New York, as well as a transfer point to the Hudson and Manhattan Railroad (now PATH), which was partially funded by the PRR, for travel to lower Manhattan. At the time, the PRR operated no fewer than 232 trains between the two cities daily. The trip, one-way, took an average of 16 minutes. The station, the adjacent 230-foot lift bridge over the Passaic River (the longest three-track railway lift span in existence at the time), the Newark City Subway extension and the realignment of the H |

Amtrak Stations in Wisconsin: Milwaukee Airport Railroad Station, Sturtevant, Milwaukee Intermodal Station, La Crosse, Columbus $8.96 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Milwaukee Airport Railroad Station, Sturtevant, Milwaukee Intermodal Station, La Crosse, Columbus, Wisconsin Dells, Tomah, Portage. Excerpt: Milwaukee Airport Railroad Station – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Milwaukee Airport Rail Station’s primary functions are to serve as an airport rail link for General Mitchell International Airport and to serve as an alternate to the downtown Milwaukee station for residents of the southern portions of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The station is served only by the Amtrak Hiawatha Service, and sees fourteen daily arrivals, seven each from Milwaukee and Chicago Union Station. The station is the second stop in route to Chicago, with a travel time along the 8-mile (13-kilometer) section taking 10 minutes. It is also the third stop in route to Milwaukee, with a travel time along the 78-mile (126-kilometer) section taking one hour and 14 minutes. For 2008, the station handled 149,824 passengers. The 1,600-square-foot (150 m) station includes a Quik-Trak ticket vending machine, restrooms, a seating area and covered walkways to both the drive-up area and the boarding platform. As the station is unstaffed, all tickets from the station need to be pre-paid, purchased from Quik-Trak or on the train from a conductor. The station parking lot contains 300 spaces and costs $5 per day per vehicle. All revenue generated from parking fees is used to finance the station’s operating costs. Transport to and from the airport terminal is provided by the free parking shuttle buses operated by the airport. The idea of opening an Amtrak station in the vicinity of Mitchell Airport is one that had been discussed since the mid-1970s. The justification for not building the station at the time was based on infrequent Amtrak… More: |

Are We Not There Yet? Travels In Nepal, North India, And Bhutan $9.51 Literary Nonfiction. Travel Writing. South Asia Studies. “Irreverent is a good word to describe this chronicle of a four-month sojourn in North India and the Himalayas undertaken by a group of California college students, teacher and novelist Rosenthal, his poet wife, and their daughter. But it merely hints at the many dimensions of Rosenthal’s roguish and frank travelogue, what with its thorny detail, skepticism, and chutzpah; complex philosophical, political, and spiritual conundrums; acid humor, mystical chaos, and cosmic surrealism. It helps that Rosenthal, hailed everywhere they go as ‘Cowboy’ thanks to his feathered hat, has been immersed in Buddhism for several decades, enabling him to extract lessons in the nature of illusion from every ludicrous, alarming, or gratifying episode within the cacophony and crush of Kolkata, the breathtaking beauty of Bhutan, the impossibilities of Sikkum, and the labyrinthine surprises of Kathmandu. Rosenthal vividly recounts time-warping complications, extreme discomfort and illness, suffocating train rides, terrifying maneuvers on crumbling mountain roads, the ferment of immense markets, bloody border conflicts, terrorism, spontaneous friendship, and glorious vistas. As he shares his affecting adventures swimming in the Ganges and visiting temples, monasteries, and a zoo without animals, Rosenthal contemplates epic suffering and transcendent beauty in a wry and transporting tale of both earthly and metaphysical journeys”–Donna Seaman, Booklist. |

Arkansas City, Kansas (Images of America Series) $19.99 Arkansas City has often been called “the gateway to the West.” The name lends a lot to describing the town–a town that was founded as a border town to Indian Territory, a major trade hub to the Indian agencies in Indian Territory, and a major transportation center for those wishing to travel through the territory and farther west. Arkansas City started off as a small town with false-fronted stores but became a bustling community where the people were forward thinkers and pushed for quality and modernization in everything they brought to the city whether that was business, industry, or entertainment. Arkansas City is known for the Cherokee Strip Land Rush of September 16, 1893, interaction with the Native Americans in Indian Territory, farming, ranching, and aircraft. Although Arkansas City was a civilized community, it was a city on the fringe of a lawless and unsettled territory where outlaws lurked and Native Americans were forced to settle. People loaded their wagons or went by train to cross through Oklahoma to Texas, New Mexico, or Arizona, leaving from Arkansas City. Due to Arkansas City’s location, interaction with major figures and events in history, and its importance to travel farther west, Arkansas City was truly “the gateway to the West.” |

Bandits Farmers Military Leaders Patriots Politicians and Prophets: Retracing the Vanishing Footprints of our Ancestors $37.95 One interpretation of early American history suggests that many of the immigrants who fled Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries were seeking freedom from the intolerable social, economic and religious injustices that were prevalent at the time. Even after arriving here, they encountered more hardship. They had to overcome what seemed to be, at times, insurmountable obstacles in their day-to-day survival. Many did not survive these harsh conditions. Children frequently survived only a few years.Mothers died young, leaving small children to be raised by relatives or neighbors. Young males who joined the military usually did so at an age where we would still consider them to be youngsters. Disease was rampant; and medical care was limited. Families were chased from their homes by hostile Indians.Livestock were killed by wild animals. The westward migration of these early settlers was extremely difficult as well. Most travel inland required transport on foot, by wagon-train or oxcart over rough terrain where the paths were often shaped by wild animals. Some of the tragedies and heartaches of our ancestors can be reviewed from limited records, while most of the information can only be retold from hearsay stories passed down from generation to generation. Such may be the history, and could well symbolize the migration patterns of the Adams, Cannon, Hobson, and Pattie families presented in this book. As a result, it is believed there may be descendants in all of the fifty states, representing all walks of life- BANDITS, FARMERS, MILITARY LEADERS, PATROITS, POLITICIANS, and PROPHETS. |
