A Science Career Against all Odds: A Life of Survival, Study, Teaching and Travel in the 20th Century $99 This autobiography is written to follow the initially turbulent and seemingly random path of education and life experiences of the author in the 1930s and 40s during the oppressive 3rd German Reich. These early childhood insights made the author an undesirable student in the 1950s in the totalitarian German Democratic Republic, and ultimately brought him to the USA. Ideally prepared, he completed a first-rate education in record time, leading in 1965 to a tenured professorship in chemistry at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, specializing in research of the solid state of linear macromolecules (polymers, plastics). Early retirement in 1988 led to a new 20-year career as Professor and Distinguished Scientist at the University of Tennessee and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. A surprising requirement of this career was an extensive amount of travel within the US and worldwide. It rekindled an interest based on his father’s love of the literature on explorations, led to a visit of many anthropological sites, and peaked with a trip around the world with Northwestern University Alumni. The unforeseeable results of writing this book were the many links between Bernhard Wunderlich’s love of teaching and research to the earliest experiences in his life. He would not want to miss or change anything. The complete list of publications and lectures is available online as electronic supplementary material on extra.springer.com |

Archaeological Sites In Devon $19.99 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Dartmoor Crosses, Fosse Way, Grimspound, Kents Cavern, Merrivale, Devon, Hound Tor, Ancient Tenements, Isca Dumnoniorum, Hembury, Grey Wethers, Drizzlecombe, Yelland Stone Rows, Yellowmead Down, Stalldown Barrow, Broadbury Castle. Excerpt: The Ancient Tenements are the oldest surviving farms on Dartmoor , in England . They have been established here since 14th century, and possibly earlier. In Mediæval Britain , grazing rights within the boundaries of the Forest of Dartmoor were strictly limited. However a few settlers were permitted to build farms there, and to release their livestock on surrounding land. These farms became known as the Ancient Tenements, and many still survive today, such as Babeny , Bellever , Brimpts, Brownberry, Dunnabridge, Dury, Hartyland, Hexworthy , Huccaby, Lakehead, Merripit, Pizwell, Prince Hall, Riddon, Runnage, and Sherberton. Many still feature buildings that are of mediæval origins, including elements of their original longhouses :The majority are Grade II listed and some are Grade II* (particularly important buildings of special interest). For centuries, these settlements were isolated from ‘civilisation’ – many miles from the nearest villages. And yet the inhabitants were still expected to travel many miles to church each Sunday, over hills and rough terrain. To make matters worse, the parish boundaries often bore little or no relation to the natural geography. However, in 1260, the Bishop decreed that the dead from Pizwell and neighbouring Babeny, could be taken to Widecombe-in-the-Moor , which was much closer and more accessible.References (URLs online) A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at Coordinates : 50°4626N 4°1106W / 50.774°N 4.185°W / 50.774; -4.185 Broadbury Castle is an Iron Age earthwork |

Archaeological Sites In Indiana $9.71 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Angel Mounds – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia For thousands of years, southwestern Indiana was home to Native Americans, who settled near the rivers and used them for travel and trade. Beginning after 1000 CE, people of the Mississippian culture built a town at this site, covering 100 square acres and situated on a large, terraced mound near the river. Today, Angel Mounds State Historic Site is nationally recognized as one of the best-preserved prehistoric Native American sites in the United States. It was given National Historic Landmark status as part of this recognition. This site is the most northeastern of the Mississippian culture. Continuing excavations reveal new elements of the complex society. From 1100 to 1450, people of the Middle Mississippian culture built and lived in a town on this site. They were known for building characteristic earthwork mounds, with shapes including platform, conical and ridgetop (as seen at Cahokia.) Angel Mounds was a chiefdom (the base of the chief) and the regional center of a large residential and agricultural community that extended for several miles around. They built a major earthwork, working with a variety of soils to create a stable mass. The platform mound held their central community. They traded with other chiefdoms and peoples along the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. This settlement was the largest-known town of its time in Indiana. Scholars estimate its population at several thousand. The people engaged in hunting and farming on the rich bottom lands of the Ohio River. In addition to the mounds they built for ceremonial and cosmological purposes, they constructed a defensive 12-foot-high stockade made of wattle and daub, and punctuated with bastions. Geography of Kitikmeot Region: Parks in Kitikmeot Region, Kugluk-Bloody Falls Territorial Park, Ovayok Territorial Park $14.14 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Parks in Kitikmeot Region, Kugluk/bloody Falls Territorial Park, Ovayok Territorial Park, Queen Maud Gulf Migratory Bird Sanctuary, North West Passage Territorial Park, Rasmussen Lowlands. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Kugluk/Bloody Falls Territorial Park (Inuinnaqtun: kugluk; English: waterfall) is located about 15 km (9.3 mi) southwest of Kugluktuk, Nunavut, Canada. The 10 ha (25 acres) park is situated around the “Bloody Falls” on the Coppermine River and was listed as a national historic site in 1978. The park is probably best known as the site of the Bloody Falls Massacre that occurred when Samuel Hearne’s Chipewyan guides massacred a group of Copper Inuit they found camped at the falls. The area, both inside and outside the current park boundaries, was used by both Inuit and First Nations people stretching back over thousands of years. Although the park today lies outside of the modern range of the Bathurst caribou herd (named for Bathurst Inlet) the area was a major hunting ground. Evidence, such as antler huts, show that it was used by both groups as a major Barren-ground Caribou hunting region. The river and falls were also a major fishing area and remain so today. Taltheilei Shale Tradition, pre-historic ancestors of the Dene, campsites about 1,500 years old, may be found in the area. There is also evidence of 7,000 year old Indian campsites. Early Paleoeskimo (pre-Dorset culture) sites are found here and have been dated to over 3,500 years. Within the last 500 years the Thule people built stone houses in the park. With the division of the Northwest Territories in 1999 the area is less used by the Dene than in previous times. Inuit from Kugluktuk still travel to the area to fish and hunt but the park is mainly a tourist attraction. Th… More: |

If they don’t adopt many of these tools, they threaten their business for the long term. Authors Dani Babb and Alex Lazo point out that there are ways for professionals to overcome these obstacles, including the expanded use of technology. This book explores some of the ways to do that using dynamic and useful tools online. |
